Screw University!
Ok, so I know specialists get paid alot because they've spent so many years working with one very small thing that they're clueless about anything else and therefore only have that to rely on as a source of income (It's true and you all know it. It'll be how I earn my money one day), but seriously; If I need you to dish out a portion of your tremendously specific knowledge because I happen to lack it, my ego is bruised enough already. Don't add to it by charging me $300 for 3 hours labour.
Seriously! The wiring between my alternator and my battery has a portion of high resistance, which is why the battery hasnt been charging and the car's been acting so strangely. So I call up the autoelectrician to fix it, they drive off and then charge me $77 per hour they work on the car. DOCTORS don't make that much per hour, and the things we mess around with can screw you over more than some dodgy wiring in a 16-year-old car can.
But apparently not as much as the Auto-electrician can.

Gotta get me into an auto-electricians apprenticship.
Ahem, excuse me, my father is a mechanic. Joe, you're probably NOT going to like what I have to say:
Mechanics, auto-electricians etc have to keep learning new things to keep up with the market of new cars. Doctors don't. They have male and female. Mechanics help you to NOT have an accident, which would then place you in the hands of the Doctor. Therefore, they can charge whatever the hell they want, especially if they are the best. Take for example Plumbers, Electricians, Concreters etc.
qUmm, firstly colleen, i KNOW what a mechanic does, and I know that they're the only ones who can do their job good enough. I stated that in the opening lines of my post. I'm just complaining about the price they charge for it.
Secondly, yes, Doctors actually do have to constantly study to stay up to date. Do you know how many cures and treatments are being trialled as we speak? Plus research into health trends, new products, new tests, new information on how the body works? Then there's how all these things interact with the old treatments, potential side-effects and risks. It's heaps more than the differences between new cars and old ones.
I'm not devaluing what anyone does for a living. I'm just complaining about how much they charge for it.
But doesn't complaining about how much mechanics charge relative to doctors based on how "vital" their work is devalue mechanics compared to doctors? If they're both equal they should charge whatever they want.
Then again, different professions are in no way "equal". If they were, I'd stay at woolies and earn millions of dollars!
Life goes on. They charge alot cos they are good at what they do. Period.
Fine, don't descend into a huge flame war. See if I care.
